Surviving and Thriving on the 10-Day ABC Trek: My Story

The Annapurna Base Camp Trek is a dream adventure for many trekking enthusiasts. Nestled in the heart of the Himalayas, this 10-day journey offers breathtaking landscapes, diverse cultures, and a sense of accomplishment like no other. But it’s not just about surviving the trek—it’s about thriving and making the most of every step along the way. Here’s my personal experience on how I conquered this incredible adventure while keeping the  trek cost within budget.



Day 1-3: The Beginning – Excitement and Challenges


Starting from Pokhara, the trek takes you through beautiful villages, terraced fields, and rhododendron forests. The initial days were filled with excitement, but adjusting to the steep ascents and descents was a challenge. I quickly learned the importance of pacing myself, staying hydrated, and taking short breaks.

Survival Tip: Carrying light gear and trekking poles made these first few days much easier.

Day 4-6: The Push Towards Machapuchare Base Camp


By the fourth day, the altitude started to make itself known. As we approached Machapuchare Base Camp (MBC), the temperature dropped, and the trails became steeper. The excitement of getting closer to Base Camp kept me going.

Thriving Tip: Layering properly and eating energy-rich meals helped me adapt to the high altitude.

Day 7: Reaching Annapurna Base Camp – The Ultimate Reward


After days of trekking through rugged terrain, standing at Annapurna Base Camp (4,130m) was a surreal experience. Surrounded by towering peaks, the view of Annapurna I, Machapuchare, and Hiunchuli was beyond breathtaking. The feeling of accomplishment made all the effort worthwhile.

Survival Tip: Acclimatization is key! Staying a night at MBC before heading to ABC helped prevent altitude sickness.

Day 8-10: Descending and Reflecting


Descending was easier but still physically demanding. My knees took a toll, but the sense of achievement and memories made it all worth it. I took my time enjoying the landscapes and soaking in the last moments of this once-in-a-lifetime journey.

Thriving Tip: Take it slow on the way down to avoid unnecessary strain on your joints.

Managing the Trek Cost


One of my biggest concerns before the trek was managing the Annapurna Base Camp trek cost efficiently. Here’s a breakdown of my expenses:

  • Permits & Fees: ACAP and TIMS permits cost around $40-$50.

  • Accommodation: Teahouses cost $5-$10 per night.

  • Food: Meals ranged from $5-$10 per meal.

  • Guides & Porters: Hiring a guide costs around $25-$30 per day, and a porter costs about $15-$20 per day.

  • Gear & Miscellaneous: Trekking gear, snacks, and other essentials added another $100-$200.


Total estimated cost: $500-$800, depending on your trekking style and choices.

Final Thoughts: Was It Worth It?


Absolutely! The Annapurna Base Camp Trek is more than just a physical challenge—it’s a journey of self-discovery. Whether you’re a seasoned trekker or a beginner, this adventure will push your limits, reward you with stunning scenery, and leave you with unforgettable memories.

Would I do it again? In a heartbeat.
